We offer a variety of performance and non-performance classes. If you love being on stage, there are classes for you! Would you rather be behind the scenes? We have those classes too. How about an option that lets you be creative but has nothing to do with theatre? We have a class for that! See below for information on each class we offer in the department.
Welcome to your troupe! Whether you are a seasoned local actor, a totally freaked beginner, or someone who wants to focus on backstage work, we will introduce you to the exciting world of live stage performance. This class is an introduction to all aspects of theatre: acting, improv, design, backstage work, and theatre history, plus the opportunity to read and watch several great plays that everyone should know. No matter what direction you want to go with theatre in your life, this is the class to start with!
You’re ready for the next step up into Drama 2, a more advanced on-stage theatre course. Emphasizing a troupe approach to acting, writing, directing, children’s theatre, film, and one-act plays, you’ll get your chance to write, edit, direct, and perform in a variety of theatrical forms with a terrific troupe of supportive actors. Your spot in the circle is waiting!
**You must take Drama 1 before taking this course**
Performers is our most challenging acting course, specifically designed for the student who wants to focus on acting technique and auditioning for roles beyond high school. Warm-ups and exercises are designed to bring out expressiveness in the voice, body, and gestures. Through script analysis, in-depth character work, and explorations in accents, acting for stage, stage combat, and directing, the actor will gain skill, confidence, and expressiveness as well as a toolbox with which to create a thousand subtle characters.
**This class is eligible for college credit**
**You must take Drama 1 and Drama 2, or get instructor approval, before taking this course**
Everyone should know how to sew on a button and fix a ripped pair of pants. Come learn this and much, much more in our sewing class! Students will learn several hand-sewing stitches, how to use a sewing machine, and get to make multiple projects designed by the students themselves. All skill levels are welcome- projects can be tailored to each student’s particular skill level.
If you’ve taken Sewing and your basic skills or level of focus could use some more practice, you should retake Sewing. If, however, you’ve taken Sewing, your skills are pretty solid, and you are motivated to work hard, this is the class for you. This class is NOT a direct continuation of the regular Sewing course, but is designed to be an AP equivalent of a Sewing curriculum. Students who sign up must be ready for challenging and complex skill-building: projects are detail-oriented, require precision, and will introduce you to a host of new techniques. Creating advanced versions of popular items (like zipper pouches and stuffies), instruction and practice in tailoring your own clothing, and learning to read and work from patterns are a few examples of what you’ll learn along the way to becoming a highly-skilled sewist.
This is a workshop designed to build the skills necessary to make the magic happen in our theatre spaces. Starting with tech boot camp, learn the fundamentals of stage lighting, sound design and sound F/X, set design and construction, prop design and construction, costume design and construction, and stage management. Stagecraft students are responsible for designing and building the sets, props, and costumes for our shows.
**You must take Drama 1 or have previous experience and get instructor approval before taking this class.**
